Biscotti del Re

The deli shop of the restaurant sells the "Cookies of the King". Our great-grandmother Gertrude Martinelli Pezzoli (grandmother Tuda) created and prepared these cookies in Altedo, on the occasion of the visit of King Victor Emanuel III on 6 June 1918.

On that same occasion, the then Mayor Zeno Pezzoli, son of grandmother Tuda, set a strange but emblematic record: being by nature not a morning person, he made the king wait so that he could sleep in.

Biscotti del Re are similar to the almond biscuits cantucci, but softer and with a decidedly different flavour given by the candied citron, anise and vanilla sugar. This particular flavour of the biscuits conquered the king who asked for more to bring to his children. Grandma Tuda wrapped them in a napkin and tied them as they used to do in the country, and turned down the king's proposal to patent them, arguing that they had been made exclusively in his honour. He asked and was give permission to call them Biscotti del Re.

Even today these biscuits are a source of pride for the town and for our whole family and at La Corte you can taste them in the most original version. They are made by our pastry chef Lorenza, who prepares all the desserts you find on the menu.
