Among our biscuits, you can find the “Biscotti del Re,” created in Altedo for the visit of King Vittorio Emanuele III on June 6, 1918, based on a recipe by my great-grandmother Gertrude Martinelli Pezzoli (Nonna Tuda), the mother of then-Mayor Zeno Pezzoli. On that occasion, she established an unusual emblematic record: being naturally disinclined to rise early, she made the king wait so she could sleep a little longer.

These biscuits, similar to cantucci but softer thanks to the candied cedar, anise, and vanilla sugar, had a distinctly different taste, and the king liked them so much that he requested some to take home to his children. Nonna Tuda wrapped them in a napkin, tying it as was customary in the countryside, and declined the king's offer to patent them, stating that they were made exclusively in honour of His Majesty and not for sale. Instead, she asked and obtained permission to call them “I Biscotti del Re,” which remain a pride of the town and our family. At La Corte, you can taste them in the original version by our pastry chef Lorenza, along with all the desserts you find on offer.
